Does anybody know of an electronics person around here, or a electronics shop that could re-solder a ROM chip onto a car ECU board?

I have a chipped ECU for my car but it started screwing up last summer so i bought a stock ECU and just sort of put it out of my mind for a while, but now i'm thinking if i could have my chipped ECU fixed cheaply it might be worth it. The problem was caused by faulty soldering in the first place.
thanks.

EDIT: I didn't read your post right..

How do you know its a faulty solder joint? If it really is a bad joint, I can fix it.

I'm pretty sure Jason there did his own chip, or someone soldered their own, I thought it was him.

I can solder/desolder as well, and have done some work with maufactured chips(ie-REAL chipboard, not solder-able breadboards). If I wasn't confident in myself, or had my doubts about something critical, I think I'd ask Jason there.

I'm reasonably sure its the soldering. The problem manifested itself in the form of completely random stalling of the engine, and it wouldnt restart until it felt like it, wether it was 5 seconds or an hour. From the research that I did, this symptom was consistent with other vw/audi folks who had poor soldering on their chip. Replacing the ECU with a factory one completely solved the problem. Is there any way to test it with a multimeter or something? It would be nice to make sure that something else on the ECU board isnt causing the problem.

The best check would be just to look at it. But you're right, it does sound like something internal on that ECU. Next time I'm in NWA, I'll let you know, I'll PM you my number. I'll look at it and see what I can do.

Lee, I've chipped two of my own ECU's, one other Honda ECU, and I'm about to start putting a new daughterboard into my friend's S13. I'm actually looking forward to that. And BTW, this isn't breadboard stuff... You still have to solder the 'socket' to the board.

Ok, it was you then that did your own; I thought so.

Oh, I know it's not breadboard stuff. I just meant that I have some experience soldering these types of boards. A lot of people solder but mostly concentrated on the boards you buy at Radio Crap, which isn't very comparable. They're a lot more forgiving of mistakes.

Ahh. Yeah, a LOT more forgiving.
