View Full Version : Dyno'd the turbo mustang
Mr. Merk
Jun-12th-06, 2:19 am
well we went down to Dyno&Performance saturday and put the car on the dyno
back up: back when i bought the car i dyno'd it and it made 178whp and 253ft-lbs, about 210hp/300ft-lbs at the flywheel, no adjustments made
about the only parts i swapped on was an aluminum flywheel and better flowing muffler, made a couple adjustments using the butt dyno too to make the best around town driving, not necessarily peak power
initial run was a 23hp/9ft-lbs gain @ 10:1 a/f (gah! way rich)
next run we turned the fuel psi down, picked up some decent torque but lost a few hp
after that we turned the timing up quite a bit (which really made a noticable difference in off boost power and around town driving/throttle response) that picked up some hp and tq
a/f was still low 11's
then we turned the boost up to 20psi for a peak total gain of 39hp/30ft-lbs at the wheels!! (but at 5200rpm it picked up 50hp/50ft-lbs)
a/f was still at a majorly safe 11.5:1, i figured that it would be a good idea to keep it there
ended up making:
218whp/284ft-lbs (flywheel: ~256hp/334ft-lbs)
then we tried some of Mel's (heavyhitter, CDS racing) VP motorsport 109, we mixed it 50/50 with my 94 octane pump gas, it made an addtional peak 2whp/14ft-lbs but at 3400rpm it made an additional 12hp/19ft-lbs!! no other changes!!
we really wanted to crank the boost up a lot more but figured i'd quit while i was ahead as i didnt have any other means to get back to fayetteville and my dad had to get to a wedding later that day
i was very very happy with the results, my goal was the same power as the sn95 4.6 GT (exactly twice the motor i have, even 2V SOHC)
i'm making: (according to edmunds)
151 more hp & 199 ft-lbs than my car came with from the factory
65 more hp & 94 more ft-lbs than a STOCK 88 T-bird turbo (my drivetrain)
31 more hp and 34 ft-lbs than a 91 5.0
21 more hp & 54 ft-lbs than a 93 cobra
16 more hp & 49 more ft-lbs than a 95 cobra
41 more hp & 49 more ft-lbs than a 96 Gt 4.6
5 less hp but 34 more ft-lbs than a 99 GT 4.6
19 less hp but 9 more ft-lbs than an LT1 f-body
56 more hp & 38 more ft-lbs than a 91 RX7 turbo (about same weight)
same hp but 17 more ft-lbs than a 93 RX7 (it's a lil lighter)
44 less hp but 51 more ft-lbs than a 91 300ZX twin turbo
66 more hp & 131 more ft-lbs than a 91 GS-T eclipse (lighter)
9 more hp & 106 more ft-lbs than a 91 porsche 911
48 more hp & 127 more ft-lbs than a 91 porchse 944
56 more hp & 134 more ft-lbs than a 91 MR2 turbo (a lil lighter)
24 more hp & 102 more ft-lbs than a 91 Supra Turbo
15 more hp & 54 more ft-lbs of TORQUE than a GTP
everything is heavier and gets worse mpg (unless noted)
i was getting 22/27 mpg BEFORE i leaned it out
dyno runs were made in 90*+ weather and we didnt use any ice or let it cool down between runs, 5 minutes max, this drivetrain has at least 160k miles
mods:
88 t-bird drivetrain
ebay cone filter
the small(er) T3 turbo (60/48)
Starion FMIC
"mild porting" of head and exhaust manifold (havent seen it)
94 ranger cam (roller version of stock)
3" downpipe and exhaust (dynomax bullet)
spec stg3 clutch/aluminum flywheel
255lph pump
thats all

yah, i am, not bad for mostly intake/exhaust related mods and some tweaking on a 165,000mi 18 year old drivetrain
i enjoy the 1hp/11lbs much more than i would say...1hp/14lbs in my daily driver, i mean that's like having 167 more hp than something with like 240hp that weighs roughly 3400lbs, whatever that might be
Vette666
Jun-20th-06, 12:26 am
um.. alright. i don't know.. i was gonna leave it at that. i prefer to not feel like i have to break everything down to hp per lb to justify it. or say what my car weighs in relation to everything... i have what i have. doesn't really matter to me how much gain i get in terms of hp per lb. just give me it straight and simple.
Mr. Merk
Jun-20th-06, 12:43 am
come'on miss pre-med, cant you do a little math?
Mr. Merk
Jun-20th-06, 12:45 am
put it this way, a 3250lb car with 345hp would only move like it had a 45hp advantage over my car
this is all theoretical of course, such as drivetrain power loss (except in the case of my car because i already did a rough calculation for that), aerodynamics etc
but its close enough to make a rough estimate
Mr. Merk
Jun-20th-06, 12:49 am

And?
What exactly is it that you're trying to prove?
My car is quick enough for me.
It's not stock and it won't be where it's at for long.
And I must say, hopping in my car on a hot summer day, into my relaxing leather interior and cold climate control is wonderful.
15 more hp & 54 more ft-lbs of TORQUE than a GTP
Not on this GTP.
I must say I love how you put it in bold to get my attention.
What RPM does that torque max at again?

of course i can do math. better than you. i'm positive of that.
what I'M saying is.. i'm glad i make enough power i don't have to break it down to weight. it doesnt matter if my car weighs a little more than some ricer.
and don't be ridiculous and act like my car is stock. its far from it.
as far as aerodynamics.. mine is almost as aerodynamic as they come. much more than yours.
oh and to your WUTSAV8.. i say i can kick your ass easy. no contest. so what's that all about? you've done all this to your car and you can almost keep up w/some STOCK v8's? how's that anything to brag about?

my car is quick enough for me too, i'm so happy for us :2thumbsup:
my car (well the drivetrain) is mostly stock, and it probably will be like this for a good while
leather....ooooh :lust:
i sure do love hoping in my RWD car on a hot summer day and driving the piss out of it, its just wonderful
I must say I love how you put it in bold to get my attention.
What RPM does that torque max at again?
hell it worked :o
the torque, ya know, the figure that is 50 something higher than a STOCK GTP, peaks at 3100, last time i checked, i believe a GTPs measily 280ft-lbs comes in at 3200
quit tbragging about your cow skins, post up some numbers

thanks sherlock, i say i can kick your GTPs ass easy, no contest, his excuse before was that he wasnt force fed
i've done all of what? i've spent $20 on a muffler (obviously, sounds like shit, tell me something i dont know for once).....and....some money on spark plugs and......tranny fluid, congrats for reminding me i've spent a lot of time and money on this car, oh cant forget the dyno tuning, made some decent gains there
i spent $100 and picked up 19hp and 24 ft-lbs, not a bad investment
almost keep up with stock V8s? i've never lost to an LT1, 5.0 or a new 05 GT mustang
LS1s, yes i already mentioned i am slower than an LS1, but still like i said, 18 yearold 160k mile engine, not too shabby? can i get an amen somebody?

yes.. corvette is very well designed to be aerodynamic. don't be an idiot.

oh contraire! someone who wanted to marry me at the time, and who is VERY close to you, told me that you freak out when it matters. and some other stuff about you ;)

Started at a 50 down the highway since it was the safest.
Good ol' 3 honks. And we went.
His car jumped ahead of mine and stayed about 1-2 car lengths. And I hung right there behind him up over 100mph till we hit the brakes.
I was worried when he got on it and started to leave me. Then we just stayed the same distance apart from there and hung together.

put it this way, a 3250lb car with 345hp would only move like it had a 45hp advantage over my car
this is all theoretical of course, such as drivetrain power loss (except in the case of my car because i already did a rough calculation for that), aerodynamics etc
but its close enough to make a rough estimate
of course i can do math. better than you. i'm positive of that.
what I'M saying is.. i'm glad i make enough power i don't have to break it down to weight. it doesnt matter if my car weighs a little more than some ricer.
and don't be ridiculous and act like my car is stock. its far from it.
as far as aerodynamics.. mine is almost as aerodynamic as they come. much more than yours.
oh and to your WUTSAV8.. i say i can kick your ass easy. no contest. so what's that all about? you've done all this to your car and you can almost keep up w/some STOCK v8's? how's that anything to brag about?

I like the fact that Sallie called the GTP "basically a luxury car."
How's that again? It's a Pontiac with cheap ass interior and gay cheap leather seats.
Now, the BMW I've been driving is much more LUXURY than a POS GTP could dream of being.

just $100? you dyno'd your car at what? 300 to the wheels? you're gonna have to do A LOT better than that.

compared to a 20 year old mustang it is. my point was what i've been saying all along. sure.. you can by an old honda or something and sink $50,000 in it to make it fast. and if that's your prerogative then great. but we... we would rather have a car that has all the options and is fast. than a cheap old car that's insanely fast. at the end of the day.. they're driving an old honda. and i'm driving a corvette. it's not all about being the fastest one out there to some people ;)

I read like 5 posts of this thread and just couldnt stand reading anymore cause I just had to make a statement.... Damn sallie you still havent matured any in a year? I really havent read any of your posts since last summer cause I lost so much weight laughing at your idiocy that I didnt have enough strength to turn on my monitor.
Anyway, I honestly didnt know that you still argue with people with your corvette. I hate those cars and would never have one thanks to you, I still havent met you and always thought you were a dude until tripple and you hooked up. It would be an honor to kiss the feet of the famous vette owner who is better than anyone on the planet and who lets everyone know about in such an nieve way.
I wish my parents wouldnt have been stupid crack addicts who were successfull by default, cause by now perhaps I would have enough money to purchase a vette, trailer it around with my navagator and laugh at stock hondas on the internet who just built their first boosted motor or dropped a couple seconds in the quarter.
I dont know what it is about you, I mean I really like you and your posts most of the time, but the rest of the time I just wanna hit the ignore button :P

how am i arguing that my car is so great? i'm saying its faster than a jetta w/only 300whp. but not that its the greatest thing out there. its the perfect car for ME and it fits ME. that's all i care about.
are you saying MY parents were crack addicts and were successful by default? my dad worked his ass off to be what he is today. he grew up very poor.. but this is what happens when you're extremely intelligent and have the ambition to drive you to be something great.. you BECOME successful.
are you being serious that you now hate corvettes b/c of me?! there was someone else who said that, a LONG time ago. and i still laugh that he let me have THAT much affect on him. you shouldn't take what i say on here that seriously.. b/c THAT is whats so funny to me.
i laugh at slow hondas that think they're fast.. or the ones that are covered in ugly decals.. 15 different colors of paint, or sound horrible. but if you paid attention.. i give them a lot of credit for being RELIABLE. stock anyway. they're a good cheap car that seems like it'll run forever. my brother has an accord and he didn't change the oil for like 3 YEARS one time.. but it never quit on him. im very impressed w/that. but when you think it's SO fast.. yeah, i'll laugh at ya.
but yes.. thank you.. i DO feed off posts like yours. and i dunno about the feel free to reply part.. b/c i don't know if this will be approved or not. :P

3rdgenRX7
Jun-23rd-06, 4:59 pm
The reason I ask is that you seem to think you are faster then Sam, and I know what power I should have and what that should net me in the 1/4. So, If your car is apprently so much faster then Sam's then it should be faster then mine, yet I have never seen you post up anything about mods, 1/4 times, dyno #s, ect. So what I propose is that you stop putting other peopls cars down until you know what your car will do.

That power and the weight(3200lb?) of you car puts you at around an 11.5 1/4 mile? that will be faster then my car by about .3-.6 faster then what my car should run(note the should I have not run my car with this set up) depending on what my car actually weighs now with all the emmisions removed, and other useless stuff. (Calculated a 12 flat if I weigh 2800 lb, and an 11.8 if it weighs about 2700 lb)

I've danced with enough of a sample of what roams the streets around NWA and I feel I can accurately say whom I'm faster than and whom I'm not. 440 to the ground will NOT give some cars around here much trouble. 440 to the ground will give 99% of the cars around here way more than they can handle.
Now for reality. Although I have not run this car on a drag strip, I also feel I've been down the drag strip enough to make a pretty good guess at her numbers. On the 295/30-19 KDW2 tires she rolls town with, she'd be LUCKY to go faster than 12.30's. Damn lucky. She'd realistically go 12.4 or slower. WHY? Horsepower to weight definately puts her in the 11's on the calculator but those formulas assume one thing - TRACTION. Give me a set of racing slicks on some 16" wheels, she's a mid 11 second player.
I get asked a lot which is faster a supercharged C5 or a nitrous C5 - the answer is this: Assuming you can get traction with either setup, the nitrous car will win everytime and be much faster both in ET and MPH on the track. Why? A supercharger is a crankshaft driven air pump - the faster the crankshaft is spinning, the more air gets moved into the engine. At lower RPM, the blower might make 50% of it's maximum power and increase as engine RPM increases. Nitrous on the other hand, adds the maximum power (and more importantly, significant amounts of torque) across the RPM spectrum thus making more power sooner - the key to low ET's.
Which power adder do I like on the C5? the blower for the street is nice, smooth, and doesn't bother the gas mileage too much if you drive without your lead foot - so the blower would be my choice. Nitrous is brutal on the tires - which of course have no chance of hooking up through the first 2-3 gears anyway - but way fun if all you like to do is burn rubber. A blower on the street, on street tires, will be faster off the stoplights than the nitrous car - rolling down I-540 at 70, the race would be pretty damn close either way.
Been there, done that.

Well that would depend on what type of supercharger you run. And for maximum efficiency, just turbocharge the motor. ;)

....and I guess that would also depend on the turbocharger of choice, eh? A turbo and a blower share many of the same qualities - they are both dependent on engine RPM essentially. Sure you could put a pee wee turbo like the kind on a VW turbo diesel Bug but seriously... why waste your time? Or you could put a unit like I have on the shelf in my shop, a 105mm which supports 2400 horsepower - but then you'd never spool it... just like blowers, there's all sizes. The key is selection for the application.
Honestly, I leave choices like that up to the ones smarter than me to figure it out. My hats off to guys like Patrick, Sam, and the others who do their homework to figure out which pieces to actually run.
FYI, my blower is a ProCharger P1-SC. My options include a D1-SC but that would only make traction matters worse - but just in case, I've got a D1 sitting here if I ever feel the need, it's only a matter of changing a few brackets.
Sorry, Pat.... back to topic.... NICE JOB ON YOUR #'s!!!

Not really. It doesn't take a scientist to select a turbocharger that's efficiency range is well suited for the size of motor it will be mated to. The supercharger can't be as efficent seeing as how its drag on the motor to create the boost.

right, but a t3/to4e seems awful small on a 3.0 V6, i used one of those on my trucks old setup (2.3) and jason is going to be running one on his 1.6L ZC honda
i guess what mel was getting at is that not just any turbo is more effecient than his procharger, say if he used a tiny turbo like the one you're going to be using he wouldnt be taking any steps forward, the blower is more fit for his application
thunderstruck507
Jun-26th-06, 12:48 pm
well the blower or turbo might not be as efficient at low rpms...but it is doing SOMETHING
isn't minimum rpms for nitrous 3k rpm?
that is the way i'm thinking, but i suppose if you leave off a high stall and spray from launch it doesn't matter
but noone will ever convince me forced induction is not the way to go on a street car for the same reasons you pointed out, plus there's the ability to cruise from here to anywhere and not have to worry about finding a place to get bottles filled
and I am ignorant to the facts but it would seem a pulley change would be easier than a jet change (assuming one had the pulley/jets and tools for each) but I may be wrong on that...and i suppose it would depend greatly on the car
my sbc leaves a lot of room under the hood where a BBC was meant to go
maybe this should be its ok thread...its an interesting discussion to me

Man patrick, with as much research you've done over the last couple years, I figured you would know better than that.
First of all, my T3/T04E is capable of near 500 RWHP. It's not huge, but definitely not "small." My T25 however, is SMALL. A T3/T04E can be ANY size almost. There are almost infinite combinations. Were you making 500 RWHP on your 2.3?
Did you know the most powerful pump gas S2000 runs a T3/T4? But you're right, 650 RWHP is too small for a 3.0 V6.
Oh, and I never mentioned using a T3/T04E on his car.
drewgray
Jun-27th-06, 9:03 am
The s2000 must be running a t3/t67, but I highly doubt that he put down 650 on pump. All Patrick was trying to say is that a t3/t4 on a 3.0L engine will spool very quickly especially a 50 trim. You will be hard pressed to make 500hp with the normal 50trim t3/t04e, but either way a 350 or even 400 hp car is nothing to sneeze at and will be loads of fun no matter how you look at it.
Also a jet change is alot easier than a pulley change. Jets are very simple to change out.

For example, we can usually change dual-stage fogger system jets (32 jets) on a hot engine in about 10 minutes with 1 person on each side of the engine.

exactly, i was making over 20psi in the low 3ks on the 2.3
u may make 500hp with it, but it wont be very efficient, you could use something like an HY35 and making that at a much lower boost level and still spool just about as fast

Holset makes good turbos, no doubt. Many Z31 guys have been using them. However, saying that "T3/T4 is too small for a 3.0 V6" is very situational to say the least. First of all, the size of turbo is only relevant to YOU and what YOU want from your car. Secondly, they actually make T3/T4's (T3/T70) that support 800 RWHP. How could that be too small? Remember, I'm staying on stock internals so I'm not planning on running anything over 450 RWHP. That's plenty for the street anyway. Its a daily driver.

No, he put down 597 RWHP on pump, yet the turbo is capable of 650 RWHP. And yes, it was a T3/T67.

i never said "t3/t4"
that is a broad statement, i said a t3/to4e, referring to your 50 trim
lastly i was just backing up mel's point in commenting to your previous broad statement saying a turbo would be better than a blower, he was obviously only saying not ANY turbo would be better
he knows turbos more than he lets on, like he said there is a 105mm on his counter

You could in theory mate a 74mm or larger compressor wheel to a t3/t4 and say it is capable of 1000hp. But it won't. It will be held back by the hotside. The t3/t70 that you speak of will never make 800whp unless it is backed by nitrous.
Hell a true T4 T70 would be hard pressed to make 800whp as it sits.

Hence why I'm running a 9.0:1 NA motor with a 50 trim T3/T4. Spool is very responsive. Unless you have an overly large turbo mounted to your motor, its usually only smaller motors like 4 cylinders (when mated with a decent sized turbo) that don't push enough air to spool it quick enough have bad turbo lag.

this is my only vehicle so i dont beat it too hard
btw where did you do your dyno tuning? i would like to run mine and find my a/f ratio, this carb has never been tuned to the car, i've already pciked a bit more power back since the tulsa trip by working on my ignition, over the weekend I plan on recurving the distributer to put my timing all in a lot sooner as well, should be a nice improvement

How many cars are daily driven that rev to 10k and make full boost at 5k? Well, quite a few actually. As, full boost at 5k or lower is pretty easy to accomplish. Look around at how many built hondas, dsms, etc are out there. Quite a few. Not many around here, though. A 4-5k power band is more than enough to be perfectly fine on a road course or anything you wanted. True, it wouldn't be too much fun putting around town at low rpms, but that will save you gas money. So that when you want to have fun, use that lil shifter thingy ma bobber and down-shift  Yep, its quite a neat function cars have. When you shift into a lower gear at the same speed, the rpm's go higher almost automatically. Wierd isn't it?
