View Full Version : Mustang Hot Street buildup
heavyhitter
Dec-15th-05, 2:00 pm
In an effort to get back on the dragstrip in 2006, I have purchased an '87 Mustang coupe that was raced previously so the foundation was decent for a our build up project into a Hot Street car. The rules for Hot Street call for basically a stock frame-railed style car with power-adders - any engine/trans. The rear tires can be no larger than 29x10.5. They don't require the car be street legal but we're gonna make sure she is... gotta cruise it when weather permits, right? She's gonna be a nitrous car with a 'glide tranny.
We're in the process of putting a new rearend and ladder bar-type rear suspension and mini-tubs as well as getting the engine compartment cleaned up.
It's being constructed in Hot Springs and as I get pics, I'll post the progress on here for all to see. Hope you guys enjoy it. Here we go:

are you going to go with a BB or a stroked SB? Also what h/c/i are you going to be running? Carbed or EFI? That rear-end is well........wow. What's the gearing in it? How big of a shot and lastly what do you expect e.t. wise?
heavyhitter
Dec-15th-05, 2:58 pm
She's gonna be 440+ inches... heh heh. Carbed, dual direct port nitrous (2 nozzles per runner), 3.70 gear. Record at Centerville is 5.14 thru the 1/8... we'd like a 4 if we can hook it.

So you are going back to the n2o days. :) I wish you would stay turbo :(
Where in Hot Springs is it being constructed? I am down here for a couple weeks. There are some pretty bad stangs around here.

I'm actually looking forward to another nitrous ride. Auston Pasquith is building this car - just discovered the cage in the car wouldn't pass new chassis rules so he's cutting the existing cage out and putting in a chrome-moly setup. Had hoped to have the car ready around Feb 1 but this is gonna push us back a bit more.
FYI. My turbo engine is for sale. It's a brand new shortblock and we reused the heads/intake/injectors. The basics: RDI 9.5 deck aluminum block, 3.75" billet crankshaft, 401" displacement, aluminum rod, fabricated pan for external oil setup, Yates C3 heads with titanium intake and stainless exhaust valves, 160lb injectors, and more... nothing but the best. Asking $20k. Will make over 2200hp with 101mm turbo (not included).

Nice k-member. Is he hand fabricating all of this or was that k-member one of the many bolt-in ones? He appears to do very good work with metal. :)
heavyhitter
Mar-7th-06, 9:26 am
The K-member was fabricated specifically to our specs although Auston didn't do that piece. He is doing everything else and is incredibly talented with metal. He was the #1 cylinder head and intake guy at Kuntz & Company for 10 years so his specialty is heads and intakes but I've learned there's not much he can't do on a race car.
Here's a pic of a recent rearend & ladder bar setup he built...

Final assembly begins today... it was picked up from the paint shop yesterday. They took two 5-gallon buckets of bondo and crap out of the body from previous damage. It's all metal now and straightened up and looks awesome - almost a shame it's gonna be a race car... more pics soon!

This is a shot looking up through the front fenderwell. The front clip, although OEM steel, is removable as 1 piece. Once it's off, the radiator support unbolts and slides off to make engine removal a snap.
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n224/MelC105/87cpe032307f.jpg
Here is the factory firewall with all access holes filled per NHRA rules. The only hole is for the steering sector assembly. If it looks like the tunnel flares on the sides at the bottom, it does. It has been 'cupped' to allow room for the 5" exhaust pipes to fit without dragging the ground.
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n224/MelC105/87cpe032307m.jpg
The rear wheel tubs are fabbed but not installed yet. They will be installed and painted after wiring, brake lines, fuel lines, etc. are installed. OEM rear frame rails and floorboard remain stock per the rules.

It's actually a "hot street" car. It will run the stock suspension class at tracks like Centerville & Prescott. Both Pro Street (unlimited rear tire size) and Outlaw 10.5 (10.5W tires) cars are true back-half cars as pictured below - these were both fun cars too!!

HEADERS AT LAST!! The engine is in the car and the headers are done except for the coating. You'd better sit down for the next part.... to let this 600+ inch monster breathe inside a Fox chassis, these bad boys had to be custom built.. Primaries are 2 3/8" step to 2.5" into 5" collectors and custom mufflers (class rules say she's gotta have mufflers). Even the pics don't do these justice... they're friggin sewer pipes!

what kind of power/times are you looking at all motor
heavyhitter
Jun-4th-07, 12:43 pm
The motor will dyno out a few ponies over 1200 and around 925 on torque before nitrous... with the right convertor (keep in mind there's quite a difference between an all-motor convertor and a nitrous converter), it should go 520's thru the 1/8 at around 135-ish mph.. we've equipped this engine with 3 "small" stages of nitrous cabability although realistically we'll only use 1 or 2 stages until we get her all dialed in.

well as sure as the season ends, we grow ever closer to a completed car - it's not as easy as it appeared early on in this project and with just one guy doing everything - chassis, engine, fabricating, wiring, etc - it's a looonnnggg process. Here's a few pics from yesterdays visit:

is that a vacuum pump connected to the valve cover? i heard that negative pressure in the crank case helps the rings seal up better. is that what you have it on there for?
heavyhitter
Nov-21st-07, 8:26 am
Yes, you pull a negative pressure in the crankcase and you'll free up some horsepower too.

thats pretty cool, learn something new everyday.
heavyhitter
Nov-21st-07, 2:43 pm
Think of it this way, you feel the compression of the pistons in the cylinders when you turn your motor over by hand. Well when the pistons are on the 'down' stroke, there's pressure build-up in the crankcase as well. Pull a vacuum on it and it makes it easier for the pistons to go down - same as pulling the spark plugs out makes it easier for the pistons to go up.

Tis a sad, sad day... after many heated conversations, it was resolved that we should pick up the mustang even though it was not finished. That being said, it's home now and David and I are going to try to get her finished up over the summer. The good news is that she will fire up and drive - trust me, the sound of over 1100hp through twin 5-inch pipes is in-fucking-credible - but she's not near ready for a trip down the track. Gotta finish up the interior, some wiring, finish plumbing the nitrous, get the glass installed, etc, etc, etc... anyway, here's today's pics....

what are those boxs on the passenger side? motec? some kind of engine management?
heavyhitter
Jun-17th-08, 12:51 pm
Similar to motec, we use the F.A.S.T. engine management system which also monitors other sensors throughout the car - driveshaft speed, fuel pressure, nitrous pressure, air inlet temp, etc - that's the box in the center. In front of it is the MSD coil and on the passenger side of the tunnel is the MSD digital ignition control box which works a little magic of it's own. Above all that is the relays and Ford starter solenoids used to contol the nitrous system. Everything is powered by dual 16-volt batteries in the trunk.

She's all together finally! We pulled all the nitrous equipment off of her 'cause until she's dialed in on the motor, no sense hosing it down and not risk getting the chassis set correctly. If ya wanna see her up close and personal, we'll have her at the United Bank show (she won't be an entry, just eye candy) this coming Saturday.

Track Day 2. Well we decided to try to test on the same weekend as the big bracket car race at Centerville soooo we only got 2 runs. Got a new tune in the FAST for today... 1st run blew the tires clean off her at the green - literally looked like John Force - had to lift and the car shifted into high gear 1.09 seconds into the pass so the run was all high gear.. the car was making good power as evidence by the mph...
Run 1:
60' 1.943
330' 4.746
1/8 et 6.834
1/8 mph 121.420
2nd run we loosened up the front end and got the tires a bit warmer on the burnout hoping to hook it. It hooked all right... major wheelstand with a drift to the left which forced me to pedal it (lift if you will), tripped the 60' foot clocks on the back tires. For some reason the shifter didn't engage high gear and so the car streched 1st gear longer than it should have. Engine saw just under 8100 rpm - sounded good but that's a little higher than we wanted it. We figure if we could have drove thru the wheelstand, she'd have been more in the 5.70-range et wise and probably 4-5mph faster...
Run 2:
60' 1.319
330' 3.997
1/8 et 6.062
1/8 mph 121.890
Got the rest of our nitrous parts sooooooo we're headed back next Saturday. For the remainder of the season, Centerville will open at noon and run till dark every Saturday in November. We're so there!!

Kudos ! Mph looks good so you know it's making some power.
It's going to be a whole different animal on the spray as you know.

Track Day 3.
Whew it was chilly this morning. So this is our 3rd day out and we felt pretty good despite not getting our internal data logger working properly. (We'll get that hammered out this next week). Not a big crowd at the track - that's good and bad. Good cause you get more runs and nobody had to wait more than 2-3 minutes in the lanes. Bad 'cause the track surface didn't get enough rubber on it although Wayne and Patty had 'sealed' the surface and the sealant seemed to do pretty well actually. Ok, onto the numbers:
Run 1:
60' 1.274
330' 3.645
1/8 et 5.609
1/8 mph 127.15
Run 2:
60' 1.277
330' 3.579
1/8 et 5.511
1/8 mph 128.64
Run 3:
60' 1.273
330' 3.575
1/8 et 5.506
1/8 mph 128.76
Run 4:
60' 1.282
330' 3.681
1/8 et 5.646
1/8 mph 127.26
The car kept wanted to lauch left a bit so we tweaked the sway bar on the last run and she made another move so had to lift costing us the ET. Overall, an excellent day at the track! 3rd time out and she's already running ET's that would have qualified her middle of the Hot Street pack at the annual shootout a few weeks ago - and we're only runnin on the MOTOR, no nitrous yet.
The nitrous system is all installed and ready so as soon as we get our data logger on the FAST box working, it's gonna be ON. For the remainder of the season, Centerville will open at noon and run till dark every Saturday in November. We're so there!!

Track Day 4.
Damn cold start today! Our 4th day out and things went well. It was 34 degrees when we arrived at the track at 10am - had to do a little electrical adjustment before the runs began. So how did we do? The numbers:
Run 1:
60' 1.312
330' 3.756
1/8 et 6.088
1/8 mph 93.23
Obviously not a good run but a drifting wheelstand forced me to lift and after pedaling it a bit, aborted the run.
Run 2:
60' 1.282
330' 3.699
1/8 et 5.642
1/8 mph 127.95
Better but it still drifted a bit on the launch. Lifted lightly to settle her but she got bit out of shape so the 660 foot run ended up being about 700 feet by the time we got to the stripe.
Run 3:
60' 1.231
330' 3.547
1/8 et 5.477
1/8 mph 128.46
Made some adjustments to the passenger ladder bar and WOW, it paid off nicely!! A 1.23 60-foot on the motor was SWEET! She still tracked a bit the first 300 feet but the better short-time was definately reflected in the 1/8th ET.
Run 4:
60' 1.262
330' 3.590
1/8 et 5.546
1/8 mph 127.55
A cloud cover took it's toll on the track surface (which wasn't great to begin with due to the chilly weather) and despite a burnout across the line, the surface just didn't cooperate - not a bad run for conditions tho!
Hopefully next weekend will be warmer and we'll finally get to try a little nitrous! Next weekend is the last weekend of racing at Centerville.

It's beginning to feel comfortable again. You're right... nitrous on a cold track usually is not a pretty picture. :)
