right now my type r has the stock suspension. i would like to upgrade to coilovers or at least high performance springs eventually, but the piping of the invidia exhaust is riding on the axle. as far as i can tell, there's no way that i will be able to lower the car because there's just no room between the axle and the exhaust pipe. i would greatly appreciate any help anyone could give me.

Invest into the Tein Hyperflex kit. You won't be disappointed.

You can move your exhuast a little bit because the way the hangers are sitting, but it might and probably will come back and clank on your suspension afterwards. You can always get new piping done and leave the muffler and the basic setup will be the same.
Yeah, I've heard very good things about Tien. And their price isn't one of them. $1500 or so all around.

hmmm... bending/getting new piping  ... thats gonna be a pain and expensive. if that is the only way to fix it, then i wont be doing that for a while (for financial reasons). What would be the point in spending $1,500 on a coilover kit to lower the car and improve handling if lowering the car isnt possible? Maliwho, do you have the hyperflex kit? I should have some pictures of the problem posted tonight or tomorrow.

HUH??? You can lower the car w/ the tein hyperflex. You can also get the EDFC controller, and control your dampening inside of the vehicle. I figured since you spent the $$$ on the Type R, you'd understand the importance of purchasing good products. If you want a good suspension setup, go w/ Tokico Illumina adjustables, and Ground Control coilovers or Tein springs. Get a progressive or skunk2 camber kit also......

Ingalls makes a good camber kit too.
There is a really really good exhaust shop in Farmington named Gene's Custom Muffler. He did from the cab back 2.25" pipe, 2 bends, and welded on a muffler for $45 for me on my old Isuzu. And it fit perfectly. Just go in and tell the doods at your shop what your situation is and they'll work around it.
I guess you have a point Mali, people who own R's aren't really going for the 'best deal'. Your Tokico/GC setup idea would work very well also .

no shit...
unless.... it's not a real type R... but either way it doesn't matter, buy a shitty suspension, have a shitty ride, you get what you pay for

Yup. I get pissed at people that come to me and ask me a price on something, and they get pissed when I say $100 for a set of coilovers. I payed over $300 for mine, and I got QUALITY stuff. They are adjustable, and have the proper spring weight for MY CAR. Not universal for 6 different cars. You get what you pay for, and people around here need to learn that.

by the way, yes, mine is a real type r. #33 of 1997. i know quality stuff is expensive. i just started this post because i have a problem with the piping of my exhaust over the axle, so lowering the car is not a possibility as of right now. i was just wondering if anyone had any ideas.

i have my car lowered an inch and a half and i had problems with my exhaust rubbing. it was really annoying but i just readjusted the exhaust and now its fine.

yeah, im not sure if i can really readjust my exhaust, because we had to have it cut and welded to make it fit, and now it's a really tight fit. how exactly did you readjust yours?

Ah, I see.... Is your exhaust stock or aftermarket? You could take a couple stock hangers, and bend them diffferently and weld em back on to move the exhaust.

yeah, i have an ividia aftermarket. ill look under my car today and see what i can do. I'll probably end up just taking it to a muffler shop again until they make it right.

good idea
i really think for the most part coilovers are really overrated for street use. even for the track there almost overrated. I say this b/c from what i know, racing teams just change out springs for each road race which is better b/c of weight savings and less to break only one thing instead of a whole uni. For my car im getting a set of bilstein dampers and h&r springs which drop the car about 1.25inches all around and i will still have a decent ride quality on the road and the car wont be too low. Plus if its just the adjustablility you want b/c you want your car slammed your always going to have to adjust the height and what happens if its too low and you hit some bad roads or a speed bump, can we say bye bye front end. Also if its the adjustible dampening you want just go for the koni adjustables they are a proven race shock just like the bilsteins just cost a lil more b/c you can adjust height. also a shock spring setup will cost you considerably less for quality parts than coilovers will cost

yeah, i see your point. i was thinking about going with the tokico shock/spring set up.

Coilovers are kind of over rated for the street/track use, but if you want to slam your car for a show, you won't have to change your springs :). But yes, for diehard racing, coilovers are kinda pointless, and I wouldn't want to change the height of my car twice each weekend for the street either...
BTW: TypeRB18C5, what color is your ITR?
