View Full Version : Your Home Computer
I just put together a new puter for home, my old board fried.
Its just a 2200 Duron (like 1.5 Ghz) 512MB DDR, 40/12/56 CD-RW, 56X CD-ROM, 120MB & 80MB HD, Iomega 100MB ZIP, Wireless 2.4 Ghz LAN, 128 DDR Radeon 9200 XT & Radeon 9000 64 DDR, Everything else is onboard.
Most of the machine was built with parts from Bil System (http://www.pcrightnow.com/) for around $175.00 with new 80Gig, the rest was just crap laying around. I have many other machines, but this is the newest.
I also have an older DELL CPI300XT Laptop 256MB RAM, 10Gig HD, 2MB Video, 2.4 Ghz Wireless.
I know the puters arent anything special but I just wanna share.
Anyone have a dual monitor setup or more?? When I get my flat screens I'm gonna add more
http://208.180.157.161/monitors1.jpg
http://208.180.157.161/monitors2.jpg
Its so easy to do anything if you have more than one monitor
Bill seems like a nice guy, I've bought alot of parts from him and he's pretty reasonable on most. Go check him out - found him on EBAY last year:D
Anyone have any Mac Performer Stuff? I need a Mac Keyboard.
Oh and my server is an old Compaq Deskpro 4000. I just reflashed the BIOS to handle larger disks....
It has a 199 (200) Mhz MMX Processor, 2 MB onboard RAM, 512MB SDRAM, 20Gb HD, 2xCd-ROM, 80MB Tape Back-UP, um....
Wireless NIC, 2 more CAT-5 NIC's..... Oh, 1 MB Trident VGA Card
guess thats it.
Pretty simple, anyone can build a server outta anything
Anyone know of any 'cheap' 56k Flex or V90 Modems w/Caller-ID - Linux/Unix Friendly???
I've been looking but the cheapest i found was $250
(I wanna display my Caller ID on every computer when the phone rings)

Hey cool, someone who knows something about computers.
I was wondering if I could overclock my P1. (haha, ok stop laughing now.) I basically got it free and I have 128MB Ram in it now with 2 hard drives, a new video card, a faster CD Rom, MUCH better Dell Monitor, etc. Anyway, it's actually decently quick with Win 95 but I was wondering if I could overclock it any? I've downloaded the FSB program but it couldn't find a match for the processor. The BIOS is ancient and isn't the Soft BIOS which supports overclocking. I know I won't pump out major juice here, but anything is better than 100MHZ. :D
(P.S. I have like 4 other computers, all of which are MUCH faster so you don't have to feel sorry for me. )
Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

lol, fsb programs and motherboard util's probably aren't gonna work on a 10 year old board...
when i overclocked my p100.. there was a jumper for clock multiplier on it, and i managed to shoot it up to 133... but that's about all i could do, had i had the 133mhz proc already, i woulda been screwed... i could also, through playing with the jumpers, take it down to 50mhz... woohoo, blazing speed
good luck trying to find a manual for your board though.. the jumper wasn't labelled by the way

Jan-18th-04, 3:59 pm
Yeah, that's what I looked for first. There are NO jumpers on my Motherboard whatsoever. It's what I like to call a "non-upgradeable" motherboard. LoL. I'd swap processors if I knew that the board would allow for up to "X" speed but I don't have any guarrantees and I'd rather not spend anymore money than I have to with this thing. That would defeat the purpose. Thanks anyways guys.

i got a sony vaio with hyperthreading or whatever its called.
good gaming pc
:D
Yeah I agree with Verge on that one. When I built that server I went through 4 different boards before I could; find one that fit in the case, find one that would accept a processor higher than 100mhz.
Most of the boards I found did not have labeled jumpers and/or realtime clocks. This board however is overclocked to 133 but its still pushing the 199mhz - I dunno how, but thats what BIOS and my Linux Software says.
Its a socket 7 so I just grabbed the bag of processors and started pluggin away till I found a sufficient one.
They have some descent older DELL units (like 233-400+mhz) most with RAM and HD's for like $100-200 on Overstock.com, I guess your not looking to purchase one tho, be easier building one.

Um, I dunno. Haha It's an Emachine w/ a celeron processor, I think a 288 but not sure. It crashed, and I couldn't find my Windows 98 backup disc, so a friend put a bootlegged copy of XP professional on it. It was decently quick at first, but now it sucks butt. The graphics suck, and it has a DVD rom in it, as well as the Burner, but the DVD drive won't work. Its a bunch of horse pussy, and I'm a dumbass and don't know how to build shit. Haha
hahaha... Naw, its ok man. Those Emachines suck anyhow -Sorry- I mean they are good working machines but the celeron and the weak power supply. Anyhow, I could come fix it for you sometime. I am free tomorrow for sure, just dont know about later in the week.
compaq 5/7000 series...
do you mean you have one, or are you dissin it?
I've had many problems with Compaqs, even just the case/power supply - does compaq do something intentionally to their machines so they can only accept compaq boards? I built a puter from that compaq case I have, it was a 1.2 Ghz and it lasted 3 months and the Processor crapped out. Stuck in another Processor and it shot 2 weeks later. I finally purchased the new board so im hoping this board will last longer since it is brand new :D eh, no matter.
i got a sony vaio with hyperthreading or whatever its called.
I almost built a machine with hyperthreading, but went $100 cheaper and built this shitbox. How can you compair your hyperthreading to other machines you've used?

I have a computer my dad put togather. AMD Athlon procesor not sure what kind. I think its around 1.4GHZ, a slow 256 RAM, dvd player and cd burner. plus a shit load of usb ports. We have four computers laying around the house but only 2 are working right now.

I have an ancient Gateway 2000. Stock Specs:
P1 100 mhz
16mb ram
800mb HD (yes, 800 mb!)
4X CD ROM
Standard Floppy
Standard 15" Monitor
S3 Trio 2 MB Video Card
Poor sound card(don't remember brand)
Upgraded Specs:
(LoL)
P1 100 mhz(don't have any extra processors)
128mb ram
Stock HD + NEC 2 GB
12X CD ROM
New Floppy(woohoo-old one broke)
Dell 17" Monitor
ATI Rage 8 MB card(just for decent display, no gaming rig here)
Stock Sound Card
JBL Platinum Speakers
Basically, I got this computer for free, I had some spare parts lying around from other old computers and what not and slapped together what you see up there for next to nothing other than a little free time. It's just a decent desktop for the internet and word processing. My goals were to see how well I can upgrade performance for as CHEAP as possible.
Ah, hehe, I hear that!
Is that a Gateway solo 2000?
If its just a 2000 it should prolly have the P5 since its a 100mhz
Lemme know and I'll look some board specs up for you. I had a p2-66 but the board was rated for like 166mhz. So you never know :D

they are cursed...
i work at bestbuy, one time, EVERY computer we had to work on was a compaq 5/7000 series.. we had like 11 of em... all in a big row, made for a nice picture, but was really shitty to the customers. Compaq should have done a recall on all of em, cause they just don't work
I would believe the cursed thing. Its kinda wierd buying new mobo and parts only to have them toast out a few months later. And then repeat the process!
I have to use that damn compaq cause I havent got that sweet metal case with the fan in the side, I forget the name cause I been hackin at scripts since 9:30 last night and its bed time, but its like a $100 case. I really was turned on buy them. Its crazy how many "mods" they have for computer cases now days, all the neons and internal/show off crap. Its just strange.
All my other machines are Desktops/Mini-Towers from the 1900's.

Uhh....yeah actually it is a P5-100.
Well That GateWay Machine may have the EFA Pegasus E5TX-AT Mobo and if so, its rated at 233 Mhz w/Intel chips.
So Theoretically, you can upgrade it to a K6-2/300Mhz Safely. your FSB is prolly somewhere close to 66Mhz. I think if that mobo is upgradable to 233 or even 166 from 100mhz, there Should be jumpers  compaq use to use small DIN style jumper blocks with 4-10 small switches used for their processor ID.

EDIT:
I found a photo and info on that Pegasus mobo, and it appears you can upgrade it to 366 :o however that may not be your board :(

Het Matt, I just found a P-166 on an old board in a box. It is functioning fine if you want it. Not much upgrading but its more that 100mhz :D
I still got my eye open for a 266 or 300 for you tho
Spring Cleaning is a great time to find extra parts..... Oops  You guys better not invade my terf this year :D
So I have a puter question about cooling to anyone who might know something about it....
Recently I checked the processor and it seemed to be running at 150+ degrees and the fan RPM was around 5500rpm - case temp was 120 deg. I descided to make a make-shift cooling device and it is steady at 120-130 degrees now with Fan RPM around 4800 and a case temp of 98-105.
I havent went out and spent $50+ on a cpu heatsink cause my CPU is built onboard and has special screw connectors to hold the sink down.
here is what it looks like at the moment:
http://208.180.157.161/bdp/computer-cooling1.jpg
http://208.180.157.161/bdp/computer-cooling3.jpg
http://208.180.157.161/bdp/computer-cooling2.jpg
Any clue on how to cool it better in this heat?
I am planning on a cold air with a K&N once I find a cheap one. I have sealed the case off to maintain intake and exhaust properties that I can control (and to reduce internal dust bunnies:D)
On the same note, has anyone ever used a watercooler heatsink or a peltier before? The peltier seems the way to go since they get so freaken cold but the moister and stuff seems too iffy to me
