I want to record my exhaust but im not sure what to use. My friend brought over his hand held recorder and it didn't work. Any suggestions?

There are alot of people in foriegn countries who use their laptop with a mic going back to the exhaust for actual driving sounds. I would imagine you would need a large cushion thing over the mic so not to get wind distortion. It couldnt be too close or it would be popping and distorted.

Have you tried a camcorder at different distances? You could plug it up via firewire/USB/Serial and download the sound from the video.

That seems too difficult tho. Maybe try using the recorder with a thick cloth or something to help muffle the sound?
