View Full Version : Probe + C.V. Shafts - Starter = Problems
Stupid Thread name I know...
So I havent had a starter for a while now and have to park on inclines so as to roll start with the clutch. Not a biggie, I dont really care but due to the impact of starting it like this, I've knocked out my Tranny Mount bolts (3 out of 4 of em) and its caused all kinds of fun for me.
SeeBurg muffler was the last to install that tranny a couple years ago when I sold it to another person (they had a clutch put in it). Why they didnt install thread locking compound is beyond me.
But since the tranny moves on acceleration and deceleration, the intermediate shaft is torqued in ways its not suppose to be, which caused my C.V. Axle to pop loose from the lock and slide off the shaft.
It ate off the entire end of the intermediate shaft when I went to take off.
I went to Junk Yard Dog since they told me on the phone that they had plenty of probes, upon getting there they only had the same blue V6 that we took parts off of for triepsyn like 3 months ago.
They went searching and found a shaft from a 626 unsure on the year but they assured me it would work. NOPE... "But all mazda's are interchangeable"... I really hate old junk yard peeps who think imports are like chevy's.
Nonetheless, I spent 45 minutes of good shower time/sleep time out pulling my shaft and loosing my brand new synthetic tranny fluid just to find out it won't bolt up

:( I feel really bad because I told you that it might work..
...Sorry BDP mang.
not your fault, they were so confident... thats why I called to see if you knew.
I will goto 59 autosalvage tomorrow and pull it myself. I know they have a couple 4Cyl 2ng Gens. Question is auto or manual interchangability?
JYD did say $45 on starter exchange... better than $150+ new but I think I'll just rebuild mine... It feels like just a soldering issue anyway, I doubt it is fried.

I thought he had others. Ok, I understand now, but still kinda don't I mean I would pay more for gas for a week or 2 until I got my car fixed.
What do you mean Jones? Its not as if I have to replace a motor or anything... I've been driving the nissan on the paper route (and that sucks).
I have plenty of transportation but I only pay insurance on the probe. It gets 400 miles to a tank... why wouldnt I :P
Also, from the time I *popped the hood til the time I closed it was about 45 minutes on the removal of that shaft... Its not very difficult and I only needed one breaker bar, 3 sockets and a 14mm wrench.
When you remove your spindle from the Strut, make sure that you dont have the car setting on a jack stand pushing up on the spindle... I took that bolt out and all hell broke loose... it was rather frightening :P
* assuming that a project on a vehicle begins and ends with the opening and closing of the hood.

That kinda proves my point BDP. I mean if its an easy fix, drive another car that is in fine running order and fix the Probe and then go back to driving the Probe as soon as its fixed!
Finally got it all repaired, I ended up taking that damn wheel and spindle off 4 different times. I had everything all finger tight so it was only 2 bolts and the wheel I had to remove, but still.
I ended up taking the new shaft (which fit just the wrong mounting bracket) and the original one and having the brackets swapped. A press took care of it nice and smoothly, BUT upon installing my new part, I realized we hadn't pressed the new shaft far enough in so the bolts were like a 1/8" from lining up. I was so pissed, I beat on it with a hammer and a bunch of stuff including a cender block but no luck.
I eventually made a holding device from some large sockets and lowered the car down on it... after a few times doing this (and jumping up and down on the car to force it in) I eventually got that 1/8" back.
Such a pain in the Arse, I need a press! And a rotary lift! and $500,000 :D
Nonetheless, after getting the part propperly fitted and the 3 bolts installed, the rest of the install took about 30 minutes including forward tire rotation and topping off the tranny fluid.
I feel I have became a pro at removing Probe axles and spindles, so if anyone needs assistance :D
One bad thing though:
I accidentally put a crease in my new CV axle and some grease was comming out. I cleaned up the wound really nicely and got all the grease off and used some epoxy (dual tube mixing thing) that sets in 5 minutes to most plastic and rubber, and I filled the hole. Its holding so far :2thumbsup:
I took the old part back to Junk Yard Dog and they refunded me my $27.00. I took photos of my problems and my old part (which was keeping the tranny fluid from draining out) and we went searching again. We located a 323 which had the same mounting bracket and CV Shaft splines but smaller tranny input shaft and splines. I had him press it all for me and I went to pay, they said $60.00 and I said WTF? I was like why did the price change when all I got was a pressed part and he goes ok... ok hows about $40? The lady in there who refunded my money said "someone had charged him $25.00 originally" so he muttered things and left the room.... that was funny as hell, they are such cons.
They did however tell me to let all my friends know that if they need parts, come see them :P
They have a nice selection of 1G DSMs with STOCK HEAD UNITS!!! I've never seen a DSM in the Bone yard with a stock head unit
Anyway... I am done now.
Peace

the only real problem i ran into was getting the drivers half shaft out. the passenger and intermediate shaft popped right out. i had to slide a screwdriver between the differential pin and the spider gears and tap the drivers axle out, all the while praying the spider gears didn't drop and cause me to shoot myself. luckily that didn't happen, and deric and i got my clutch swapped in 15ish hours. :2thumbsup:
good job on gettin it fixed brandon.
