FORT SMITH : Race ends in 2 dead as car hits residence

FORT SMITH — A race between two cars on Old Greenwood Road killed two people Friday afternoon when the car they were in sped off the road and plowed under a house.

Austin Wayne McKusker, 22, and Leslie Megan Paige Perry, 16, both of Mansfield, were in a silver 2003 Honda S 2000 that was racing an older gray Ford Mustang in the 1500 block of Old Greenwood Road about 4: 10 p.m.

William Eric Bradley, 29, of Van Buren surrendered to police after learning from a Fort Smith television station broadcast that authorities were looking for the driver of the Mustang, which had minor damage to the right front fender. Bradley remains jailed without bond on a charge of leaving the scene of a personal injury accident.

Fort Smith police spokesman Cpl. Mikeal Bates said the cars were traveling in excess of 70 mph in a residential area next to the George Hernreich Memorial Sports Complex, where the speed limit is 35 mph.

Quai Anderson, 15, of Fort Smith, who was playing baseball at the complex, said he saw the Mustang strike the rear of the Honda. He said it appeared the Honda may have been trying to turn west onto South P Street when the Mustang nudged it.

Witnesses said the two began racing at the intersection of Old Greenwood Road and Dodson Avenue three blocks north of where the crash occurred.

Old Greenwood Road is a four-lane artery running south from Rogers Avenue to Phoenix Avenue.

The Honda skidded off Old Greenwood Road at South P Street and struck the corner foundation of a house at 3020 S. P St. All but the rear of the wrecked car was under the house. Emergency personnel had to pull it partially from under the house to get to McKusker and Perry.

The two were pronounced dead at the scene.

Homeowner Imogene Stec, 79, said she was in the living room with her son David when the Honda slammed into the foundation under a room next to them making a “huge noise.” They went outside to look for the cause, she said, and nearly missed the Honda because it was wedged so far under the house and bushes.

Dark but short skid marks leading from Old Greenwood Road onto South P Street marked the path of the Honda where it ran off the road. The car was traveling so fast that the tires broke off chunks of the concrete curb.

Another witness, Ron Ohlde, a coach with the Immaculate Conception Babe Ruth Church League baseball team, said he saw the Mustang slow down after the collision, then spin its tires as the driver fled south from the scene.

FORT SMITH - Police say two people are dead after their car veered off the road and hit a house on South P Street so hard it landed underneath the home.

The names of those killed have not been released. However, we do know one of the victims is a male, and the other a 16-year-old girl. Police believe the driver and the driver of another car were racing on Old Greenwood Road shortly before the accident happened around 4pm.

They are asking for your help to find the other driver, who was driving an older gray Mustang to question him about what happened.

If you have any information in this case, please call Fort Smith Police.

Ouch, yeah that road's not such a good idea. He must have been booking it to wedge himself under a house. That sucks.

That's kind of how it appears to me, too. Either that or one lost control a bit and made their way into the other's lane.

Whatever the reason, it's a sad ending.

The witness said he saw the Mustang nudge the S2000 right before the S went off the road. Seemed more like a pissing contest to me... and the fact that the dude in the S2000's 16y/o girlfriend died too, how freakin sad. She didn't even get a chance at life. <_<

Yeah, that's one of the dumbest things to do, racing some other douche bag with your very young girlfriend in the passenger seat. Ladies and Gentlemen, this is why you race at the track and not on some side street with a passenger...

This is also a good example of someone pushing their car way too hard for a stupid reason. If you're pushing hard enough to lose control, you're pushing too hard. Slow your ass down.
There have been numerous similar accidents... I mentioned the one concerning Synergy501. After it got out that the members weren't as against it as was publicized, I think the newspaper took the article off the web because I can't find it. I'm not totally against having a passenger, but the passenger should definetly know all the risks involved and have the option not to ride along.
Anyone who's ever raced (on a track or on the street) should keep these accidents at the forefront of their minds and at least take precautions and try to be safe. If you screw up, that's your fault and you should be prepared to pay the price. But try to keep others out of harms way.

S2000's in general are just easy to break the ass end loose at any speed, not just when you're doing 70mph. I mean, you easily do 70+ on the bypass... Just racing in a residential area and being nudged = cause for the shit to hit the fan.

I'm sure... But I was actually referring to the Mustang. If HE hadn't lost control and tapped the s2000, maybe all of them would be standing around at a sonic somewhere in Ft Smith telling the story.

From what I was reading on different forums, the mustang nudged the S2k on purpose. When he nudged, the assend broke loose on the s2000 and thats when it went flying.

Fatal Fort Smith Accident
Reported by: Carley Gordon
Friday, Jun 6, 2008 @09:04pm CST

A 22-year-old man and a 16-year-old girl died Friday afternoon after they crashed a mustang into a Fort Smith home. When we got to the scene, the car was completely lodged up under the house. Officers say the two were racing another truck and they lost control. David Stec was inside the house with his mother when the crash happened.

“Mom and I were sitting in the living room and we heard some screeching and we knew a car had hit the house,” says Stec.

Stec and his mother ran outside as soon as they felt the house shake. Their neighbor, Mike Woosley, saw the entire accident.

“I looked up and this small, grey car was facing west, flying south and looked like it was going at least 80 miles an hour sideways,” explains Woosley.

The car went under the home on Old Greenwood Road. Stec and Woosley did their best to help the two stuck inside.

“The driver had actually come to. He was breathing some, but there was blood coming out of his ears and blood coming out of his nose, so it wasn't looking very good,” says Stec.

“I was pretty shook up. I was shaking all over. I just couldn't quit shaking. It just made me real sick. I just couldn't believe what I had just witnessed,” explains Woosley.

Officers say road racing is unacceptable.

“It’s very close to the ball fields and the parks. There could have been small children out. You know, this could have easily been much more tragic than it is,” says Major Dean Pitts from the Fort Smith Police Department.

Police say the man driving the other truck involved in the race took off after the crash. He later showed up at the Fort Smith Police Department to make a statement. We’re still waiting to hear if he’ll face any charges.

Wow. Then the guy in the mustang's really a douche. Hope he gets a strict sentence. Like... his car impounded, his license suspended, 10 lashings, and a while in jail.

Although, it would be hard to prove that he did it on purpose unless he admits to it.

I wish that they would of lived, so they could think twice next time. One of the major reasons why I've been able to keep the tib for 5 1/2 years. That, and i've been lucky enough not to get hit by other drivers who talk on the cell phones, or put on make-up while driving.

well imo the 22 year old should have known street racing is retarded... it would be a different story if the driver was the 16 year old..we all did it not caring about wrecking thinking we were invincible.

just goes to show, doesnt matter how many times you've done it or how good of a driver you are, conditions are uncontrollable and so are other drivers..

i saw a truck run over a guy on a harley today, that was horrible :(. from the looks of it the dude probably isnt gonna make it.

i dont endorse the whole "keep it at the track" deal, few people that say it are serious (not accusing anyone just saying). but a residential area is a horrible idea, i did that once when i was 16, fortunately i didn't learn my lesson the hard way. i've grown quite a bit since then, and i won't race in a neighborhood. had a guy try and race me when his child was in a car seat in the back of his charger.... told him to piss off, racing is fun, but its not worth lives. take it to a nearly abandoned or secluded area and make sure no one is around to get hurt, that's how i'll normally try and do it.

as for the mustang purposely doing that.... i sure as shit hope not, i've seen some heated races (ones involving money, or grudge races involving two shit talkers) none of them ended like that. for my sanity i would like to think that no car enthusiast would wish death upon another, if that's not the case then the street racing world is on its way down the shitter :(

street racing is just another stupid thing we do, as is smoking, drinking and driving, talk shit to cops, etc... they can all eventually get you killed. theres nothing you can do about it, so why even bitch anymore. I don't endorse it one bit but I won't bitch about it anymore.

Ok, being a family friend of the man driving the Silver GT mustang involved, and knowing the previous owner of the car, that damage was already done to the mustang. Secondly, not to speak ill of the passed, but austin was not a very experienced driver. I knew him back in the day. The reason he "lost control" of the s2k is because he had nitrous, which he used after he started losing to the gt mustang it was racing(which is not stco, btw) and due to bad tires he lost control. Ending in an honest to god tragedy. I am very sorry this happened to him, but people need to get their facts straight. It was not bills fault austin wrecked. Not to mention, bill aka william did not know about what had happened till he saw it on the news, and then he turned himself in. Just clearing things up.
